You choose the audience score over the critic's score, every single time.
Wow, okay. You got some good taste, my friend. My calculations show that you love to sink into a movie after a long day. I mean. Same. From what I can tell, you love soapy goodness that will suck you in regardless of what you have going on in your life. And you’re not afraid to unabashedly love a movie that film snobs might write off as “bad.” For you, the real question isn’t “is it good or bad?” It’s “is it compelling?”. Because you’re primarily attracted to smart writing chock-full of zings and pows of wit and humor. You also want your storytelling to be one of two (very different) things: either real and reflective of the complicated world that we live in OR glossy, full of fun clichés, and a little unbelievable, but still with a wink to the realities of the world.
Here are three films we think you will love, personalized from your unique taste:
ROMEO + JULIET (1996)
Dir. Baz Luhrmann
If you were waiting for a rainy day to watch this film, turn on a white noise app and do this thing. ROMEO & JULIET is so much more fun than you think it will be—especially given its popularity with high school drama clubs. Luhrmann’s version of the classic story is absurd in the best way. It’s set in the 90s in a dynamic version of Verona that the director calls a “hybrid of Miami and Brazil.” This is all juxtaposed against the original dialogue written by Shakespeare (or someone else—up to you what you believe). Plus, the soundtrack. There’s a Radiohead b-side you’ll never hear again without thinking of Claire and Leo.
Check this one out for a young Leonardo DiCaprio, Clare Daines, and Paul Rudd. You’ll love it if you also liked THE GREAT GATSBY or 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU.
DEATH BECOMES HER (1992)
Dir. Robert Zemeckis
I lived too long without knowing this movie existed. I will not let you make the same mistake. Two rivals (wonderfully played by Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn) are entwined in a love triangle, which is more intense than your average romantic entanglement, thanks to the fact that the third in their triangle holds the secret to eternal life. This film doesn’t take itself too seriously and is campy and dark and rompy in the very best ways.
Check this one out if you’re looking for a good time. And to see Meryl Streep at her best. You’ll love it if you also liked PRACTICAL MAGIC or CRUEL INTENTIONS.
MONSOON WEDDING (2001)
Dir. Mira Nair (India)
Two big Indian families come together for a last-minute wedding in Delhi. It is an event, and those with stakes in the wedding are stressed—some financially, some romantically, and almost all emotionally. The film is captivating, intimate, and masterfully executed. It’s funny and full of drama and will leave you humming Chunari Chunari into the next decade.
Check this one out if you’re ready to get swept up into a character-filled weekend. You’ll love it if you also liked LOVE, ACTUALLY or LEAP YEAR.
