You like the weird shit that makes you think—and feel—and then think some more.
To you, movies are meant to Capital E Entertain. You love memorable, quotable, well-written, complicated characters. The kind you’ll still be discussing and dissecting years from now, and will maybe even dress up as for Halloween. With a wink and a slew of nuanced details, of course. Anyway, you’re attracted to smart humor that’s specific to the story and to you—the quirkier and weirder, the better.
Here are three films we think you will love, personalized from your unique taste:
HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016)
Dir. Taika Waititi (New Zealand)
I can only describe this movie as majestic. After a boy is abandoned by his mother, he’s taken in by a couple who lives on a remote farm. Soon after, he finds himself on the run with his, er, unique foster uncle in the wilds of New Zealand. As a national manhunt ensues, the unlikely pair must join forces in order to survive.
Check this one out if you’re in the mood for an adventure. You’ll love it if you also liked UP or MOONRISE KINGDOM.
BLACKKKLANSMAN (2018)
Dir. Spike Lee
This movie takes you on a ride that you probably would not expect from a biographical story. It’s based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth and centers around Ron, who was the first Black police officer in the Colorado Springs PD. After initially spending all of his time doing paperwork, Ron must run a high-stakes undercover operation to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan. John David Washington and Adam Driver are fantastic in their roles as unlikely partners and make it impossible to look away from the screen. The soundtrack is also amazing, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Check this one out if you can’t get enough of true stories. You’ll love it if you also liked GOOD WILL HUNTING or THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI.
A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988)
Dir. Charles Crichton (United Kingdom)
Having a kinda terrible day? WANDA can help. No really, the film is that good. It stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin as a band of diamond thieves on the hunt to find, well, stolen diamonds. It’s hilarious and smart and I know you will love it. The characters are eccentric and larger than life—and Curtis, Kline, and Palin really prove out their comedy chops inhabiting each of them.
Check this one out if you’re into British comedies. You’ll love it if you also liked FARGO or KNIVES OUT.
